Your hard drive shows it’s full, Google Drive is running in the background, and you’re afraid of losing everything by turning off synchronization. This fear is legitimate, but the reality is simpler than it seems. Understanding what the Drive client for computer actually does allows you to disable synchronization calmly, without risking any file deletion.
Mirror mode and streaming mode: the distinction that changes everything
Before adjusting the settings, you need to know how your files exist on your PC. Google Drive for computer offers two modes of operation, and the method of desynchronization depends on the active mode.

Streaming mode displays your files in Windows Explorer without physically storing them. They are only downloaded when you open them. In this case, turning off synchronization simply makes the virtual drive disappear, but everything remains intact in the cloud.

Log in to drive.google.com from your browser. Browse your main folders and check that everything is there. This check takes a few minutes and ensures that the cloud copy is complete before touching the local files.
On the PC side, if you were in mirror mode, open the Google Drive folder on your hard drive. The files are still there. You can move them to another location or leave them in place.
One point deserves attention for business users. Even after stopping synchronization, files already present in Google Drive remain subject to your organization’s compliance rules (retention, data loss prevention, sharing restrictions). Uninstalling the client on your workstation does not change these policies on the server side.
Desynchronize a specific folder without cutting everything off
You may not need to stop all synchronization. If a single large folder is cluttering your disk, it is possible to remove it from the synchronized scope.
In the Drive client preferences, the “Folders on my computer” section lists the directories backed up to the cloud. Uncheck those you no longer wish to synchronize. The files in these folders remain on your PC but are no longer sent to Drive.
Conversely, in the “Google Drive” section in mirror mode, you can choose to synchronize only certain folders from the cloud to your computer. This frees up disk space without affecting the online files.

Desynchronizing Google Drive does not delete anything unless you explicitly request deletion. The real risk is not in cutting off synchronization, but in confusing local deletion with disconnection. Before any action, check your mode (streaming or mirror), confirm the presence of your files in the cloud via the browser, and then proceed. Your documents will remain where you left them.
